Twelve Tomorrows edited by Bruce Sterling
I really loved the MIT Technology Review annual this year, with great pieces by Lauren Beukes, Warren Ellis, William Gibson and others. Most refreshingly, there were pieces in here with takes on their subjects that felt genuinely contemporary, and newly conceived. Beukes’ piece “Slipping” in particular landed this way for me, spinning a tale of the pressures of professional post-human youth sports when the athletes, their teams and their “sponsors” took the story’s technological premises as tools, not mystical powers.
